Consolidation

I’ve decided to combine my two blogs thus making one super powered blog, or at least a more regularly updated and interesting blog.

I will merge It’s Just Hearsay with Visionsof Whimsy, which I’ve kept for much longer and until now focused on art with mythic, spiritual, or fantastical themes. Head on over a check it out, all Hearsay updates and behind the scenes will now be found there.

Designing a Collection

Goal: Design an incredibly gorgeous, innovative, and spectacular range of jewellery with which to launch the next phase of my label

Deadline: August / In time to apply for the next Brisbane Finders Keepers Market

Current Status: I think I'm on the right track. I've been researching collections by some of my favourite jewellery labels including Lizzie Fortunato Jewels, who I only discovered a week ago and have already looked through their ranges three or four times, I just like looking at it. I've started an inspiration board on Pinterest, I've made a prototype and have started a sketch book.

I'm very excited about this new collection and can't wait to get prototyping.

Updates coming your way soon.

Sale at The Village Markets

This Sunday I'm back at The Village Markets and have something special planned... a sale!

Was $39 Now $30

The sale will only apply to the markets so if you live nearby pop out to see me at Burleigh Heads State School oval the 20th of May 8am to 1pm.

There will be earrings, hair clips and more all available at a reduced rate, very exciting.

On top of the fabulous sale I will also be officially launching a gorgeous new range of waxed cotton cord jewellery in a selection of bright fun colours.

Looking forward to seeing you :)

Collections

The last few weeks I've been working on some new designs, necklaces mostly. I'd been doing this on the living room table and needed to clear it before a friend came over for dinner, and I did, but when all the tools and scraps and materials were cleared away I decided I would quickly lay out all my necklaces and bracelets out and organise them into collections.

This is my rope collection, I was already pretty sure of it but I now have some extra pieces and am toying with the idea of dyeing or painting the rope so I can offer a wider variety of colours.

The twine tassel necklace and twine bracelet feel a little out of place here, I might have some thinking to do.

There are two more collections I'm working on, however, I'm going to keep a little more tight lipped about these until there ready to be launched, or relaunched in the case of one of them. Here are some teaser shots to get your mind spinning.

My New Display Piece

I've been struggling with my market display of late. What do I want from it? What impression do I want it to give? What do I want it to say about my work?

Well I started with a mood board...

Then I planned a trip to the op shops but after realizing I had next to no money decided to raid the garage instead. I found an old play cabinet my grandfather made for me.

At this point I'd already done some cleaning work (it was covered in cobwebs and wasp nests), removed the doors, rusted hooks and plastic runners.

I cut it in half to make two shelves that would sit nicely on my table.

Unfortunately I tore the pretty wallpaper where I cut it.

I'll go on to destroy this lovely wallpaper again later.

Because of where I cut it etc etc, the half on the right (above pic) had the back board coming away from the sides at the top. So I got some liquid nails wood glue and glued it together. I left it for a day and then secured it further with actual nails.

While this was happening I spray painted the other side.

And here's a picture of my darling helping me cover the wall paper in preparation of spray painting.
I thought rather than using all the masking tape I would use waxed paper and just mask the edges and secure the paper with the tape... big mistake.

Yep it went through. The particularly bad spot I tried to fix with turps but only made big black smudges :(

I didn't let it get me down however.

Next I drilled little holes wherever I wanted hooks to go and then I screwed in the hooks.

Now I didn't want to make the same mistake twice so for the the second half I taped up the whole thing. Alas it was old tape and perhaps didn't hold at the edges as much as I would have liked.

Despite the wall paper hiccups, the whole thing got to a stage I'd like to call finished and here are some shots of the shelves all done up and pretty like.

At the Markets

It was a great weekend starting with Bleeding Heart City Markets and finishing with The Village Markets on Sunday.

Despite the overcast weather on Friday it was great chatting with Shelley of Impossible Alice and Jess from Epheriell Designs.

View from behind my stall. I didn't mind at all staring at the beautiful stalls of Arkive Vintage and Neverland all day.

Next to me was some gorgeous jewellery featuring real swarkovski crystal from Divine Creatures.

I'm super excited about the rest of the month, which is pretty much booked solid.
The line up:
The Village Markets: Sunday 19th Feb
BrisStyle Indie Twilight Markets: Friday 24th Feb (my first one)
Suitcase Rummage @ 'We Made This' The Edge State Library of Queensland: Saturday 25th Feb

OK so maybe not booked solid, but still pretty busy :)

I was so excited when I saw this sign in King George Square I just had to take a photo. You can see my reflection almost as well as the sign.

I'm also starting to plan some markets for early March so keep tuned :)

Native American Fashion

There seems to be quite a trend in fashion at the moment towards the Native American. Tribal/geometric prints and feathers are everywhere. It's a trend we've seen before, I remember only a few years ago fringes were quite the thing, and I'm sure we'll see it again. I'm quite a fan of this look and while I won't be using actual feathers I'm keen to incorporate some Native American imagery, patterns and materials into my own jewellery. The first logical step? Google images of course.
